Bridging the gap between BSE risk assessment and consumer perception of the surveillance system in Japan OAK
KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo; HILL, Glen; SAWADA, Manabu; YOSHIDA, Seiko;
Since the first case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was encountered in Japan in 2001, the country quickly responded with a change from passive to active surveillance. The response has not been a smooth one, though, and news media have contributed to opening the public’s eyes to inadequate behavior from government sources responsible for monitoring and protecting the health of consumers. The resultant information“gap” has served to augment the typical Japanese perceptions of risk assessment, as assessed in surveys from 2003 to 2005. Such false beliefs have caused consumers to call for 100% testing of animals for BSE despite accepted scientific standards which do not support such comprehensive and costly surveillance. Instead, testing agencies...

English Resource Center as a service group and self-access English learning facility OAK
HILL, Glen;
Self-access centers at universities provide convenient means for students to make use of educational materials. The English Resource Center at Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine offers materials and services to benefit students as well as staff and faculty. Leveled English books constitute the main material resource, and proofreading of scientific papers is the primary service. There exists an atmosphere of low motivation or awareness among students towards learning English that should be improved before they can make full use of this type of self-access center.

Livestock Production and Foodborne Diseases from Food Animals in Thailand OAK
PADUNGTOD, Pawin; KADOHIRA, Mutsuyo; HILL, Glen;
Thailand is a developing nation dependent on agriculture. Due to lack of modern public health practices, she suffers from the consequences of foodborne illnesses. The number of foodborne infection cases has nearly doubled in the past 10 years. Salmonella and Campylobacter pose the greatest risk of bacterial contaminants, mostly from pigs and chickens, and this paper will review livestock production systems and foodborne diseases from cases stemming from these sources. Due to the complexity of the livestock production systems, collection of data to date has been sporadic, but it is clear that controls are needed in slaughterhouse processing methods, and more communication between agencies and surrounding regions is paramount for proper surveillance to have...

Role of English in building a stronger school - wide academic program OAK
Smith, Marshall; Hill, Glen; Campbell, David; Tokioka, Hirozumi;
In academics, English is traditionally viewed as an independent department functioning on its own with little, if any, cooperation or interest coming from non-English-related students and staff of an institution. But with the changing times and increasingly competitive environment that have quite dramatically impacted education in Japan, it may be time to more seriously consider some options for making one’s English program more viable, and even indispensable, to the overall success of a school. Available options include English resource center, language support for research in other departments, networking with other departments, creating more opportunities for improvement of English skills among students and staff, promoting a...

Survey of teachers’ perceptions toward reading English at a science university OAK
HILL, Glen;
Teachers at a science university were surveyed for their feelings toward students reading in English as part of the curriculum. The information was gathered as part of a needs analysis to create a syllabus for the English Reading Skills course for first-year students. Responses were collected about undergraduate and graduate students; teachers were asked their opinions about what both types of students should read in English in preparation for their science careers, and about the English materials that are currently in use at the university. The results showed that most respondents use English textbooks, in-class prints, journal articles, and Internet sites as the most common materials for undergraduate and graduate school science courses. Teachers use...
